JEB DUNNUCK

2016 Domaine de Mourchon Cotes du Rhone

Note : 88

The 2016 Côtes du Rhône checks in as 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah brought up in tank. It’s a peppery, herbal effort that has quality black fruits, plenty of garrigue and olive notes, medium body, and a supple, rounded, polished style. It shows the richness and depth of this sensational vintage and is a terrific value to drink over the coming 3-5 years.

ROBERT PARKER’S WINE ADVOCATE

Note : 88

One of only a couple of 2015s to be bottled when I visited the domaine in late August 2017, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone is plump, round and supple, with attractive berry and cola flavors that linger on the finish. Drink this medium-bodied wine over the next few years.

2015 Domaine de Mourchon Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret Tradition

Note : 90

From one of the most beautiful villages in the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret Tradition is a blend of mostly Grenache that includes smaller amounts of Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault. This deep ruby/purple-colored effort gives up a rocking bouquet of mulberries, garrigue, tapenade, and a limestone-like minerality. Peppery and medium-bodied, it has the focused, tight style that’s common in the vintage, beautiful purity, and a great finish. It’s going to keep nicely for 7-8 years.

2015 Domaine de Mourchon Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret Grenache Family Reserve

As with the Family Reserve Syrah, the 2015 Family Reserve Grenache is a tiny production cuvee that’s only made in top vintages. From 100% Grenache grown on limestone soils, it boasts stunning, incredibly Provençal notes of kirsch liqueur, lavender, violets, herbes de Provence, and pepper. Expansive, sexy, broad, and concentrated on the palate, with sensational intensity and length, this is another tour de force from what is unquestionably the leading estate in Séguret, as well as an estate that will compete with the top tier in the entire Rhône valley.

2015 Domaine de Mourchon Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret Syrah Family Reserve

Note : 93

Coming from the oldest Syrah vines on the estate, the 2015 Syrah Family Reserve is slightly deeper colored than its siblings and gives up a little Cornas flare in its smoky, spicy, barbecue aromas, ripe cherry and currant fruits, plenty of olive and meatiness, full-bodied richness, and big finish. It has terrific opulence and depth (especially in the vintage), notable structure, and is a serious good Syrah from the South that readers should be happy to have in the cellar. It will continue drinking beautifully through 2027+.

2015 Domaine de Mourchon Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret Grand Reserve

Note: 92+

The 2015 Séguret Grand Reserve checks in as a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah brought up in barrel. It gives up a serious bouquet of ripe black raspberries, black cherries, kirsch, camphor, and graphite, with a building sense of minerality coming through with time in the glass. It’s rich and concentrated, with the structure, firmness, and tight style of the 2015 vintage front and center. I love its density, but it needs 2-3 years of bottle age to open up. It should be very long lived and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it drinking beautifully at age 15.

Note : 90

Moving to the reds, the base 2015 Côtes du Rhône is a 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah aged in tank. This medium ruby colored effort offers lots of black cherries, garrigue/underbrush and pepper aromas and flavors, medium-bodied richness, a light, easy texture and loads of easy-going charm. Drink it over the coming 2-3 years.

JANCIS ROBINSON

Note : 16/20

60% Grenache, 40% Syrah. Vine age 40 years. Aged in concrete vats. Négoce wine. Smells dark, smoky and elegant, with just a touch of red fruit as it opens in the glass. Lovely dry darkness, fine texture and subtle, the Syrah seeming to dominate in that dark peppery character. Delicious and refined. Slightly abrupt finish at the moment. (JH)

JEB DUNNUCK

Note : 87

A fresh and almost delicate wine, the 2008 Domaine de Mourchon Côtes du Rhône is aged completely in concrete and is a blend of Syrah and Grenache. It possesses a semi-transparent purple color as well as bright aromatics of wild cherries, spice and violets that are all wrapped around loads of mineral and earthy notes. With air, a subtle game and meaty character comes out. The wine is medium to light bodied on the palate with a smooth, almost burgundian texture, loads of fresh acidity and a clean, enjoyable finish. Fleshing out and gaining weight in the glass, this delicious red should be consumed over the following 3 to 5 years.
