2020
Note : 89/100
2019
Note : 90/100
2016
Note : 88/100
The 2016 Côtes du Rhône checks in as 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah brought up in tank. It’s a peppery, herbal effort that has quality black fruits, plenty of garrigue and olive notes, medium body, and a supple, rounded, polished style. It shows the richness and depth of this sensational vintage and is a terrific value to drink over the coming 3-5 years.
2015
Note : 88/100
One of only a couple of 2015s to be bottled when I visited the domaine in late August 2017, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone is plump, round and supple, with attractive berry and cola flavors that linger on the finish. Drink this medium-bodied wine over the next few years.
Note : 89/100
This has a core of gently mulled plum and blackberry fruit, lined with subtle anise, cinnamon and lavender notes. The silky but persistent finish shows nice purity. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2018. 2,000 cases made.
Note : 90/100
From one of the most beautiful villages in the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret Tradition is a blend of mostly Grenache that includes smaller amounts of Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault. This deep ruby/purple-colored effort gives up a rocking bouquet of mulberries, garrigue, tapenade, and a limestone-like minerality. Peppery and medium-bodied, it has the focused, tight style that’s common in the vintage, beautiful purity, and a great finish. It’s going to keep nicely for 7-8 years.
2014
Note : 88/100
This delivers a juicy, direct beam of raspberry preserves, flecked with anise and violet notes. Offers a fleshy feel, but remains fresh and open. Drink now. 4,000 cases made.
Note : 16/20
60% Grenache, 40% Syrah. Vine age 40 years. Aged in concrete vats. Négoce wine. Smells dark, smoky and elegant, with just a touch of red fruit as it opens in the glass. Lovely dry darkness, fine texture and subtle, the Syrah seeming to dominate in that dark peppery character. Delicious and refined. Slightly abrupt finish at the moment. (JH)
2013
Note : 85/100
A toasty style, with fruitcake and black tea notes around a core of cherry preserve flavor. Direct, open finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made.
2011
Note : 88/100
This shows a dark toasty edge, offering ganache and warm espresso notes that marry nicely with the fleshy core of blackberry and plum fruit., with a caressing finish. A crowd-pleaser. Drink now. 1,000 cases made.
2010
Note : 89/100
Bright violet color. Pungent dark berries and licorice on the nose and in the mouth. Shows a spicy quality with air, which adds back-end lift and bite. Finishes spicy and quite long, with silky tannins and a hint of cracked pepper.
2008
Note : 87/100
Fresh and juicy, with open-knit red cherry and currant fruit laced with hints of garrigue and tobacco. There’s a nice chalky twinge on the finish. Drink now. 1,000 cases made.
Note : 87/100
A fresh and almost delicate wine, the 2008 Domaine de Mourchon Côtes du Rhône is aged completely in concrete and is a blend of Syrah and Grenache. It possesses a semi-transparent purple color as well as bright aromatics of wild cherries, spice and violets that are all wrapped around loads of mineral and earthy notes. With air, a subtle game and meaty character comes out. The wine is medium to light bodied on the palate with a smooth, almost burgundian texture, loads of fresh acidity and a clean, enjoyable finish. Fleshing out and gaining weight in the glass, this delicious red should be consumed over the following 3 to 5 years.
